The 500 year-old Spanish colonial city of Trinidad Cuba, a UNESCO World Heritage Site perched at the base of the seaward slope of the Sierra Escambray mountains on Cuba’s southern coast, is one of the best destinations in Cuba. Trinidad is located in near the middle of the island in Sancti Spiritus province, about 75 minutes by car east of Cienfuegos, or about five hours drive time from Havana. The historic core of Trinidad is paved with river-stone streets, and is filled with open-air paladares offering some of the best food in Cuba. At night Trinidad Cuba comes alive with live music and dancing under the stars. Many of the inns in our lodging network in Trinidad are centuries-old mansions meticulously restored and discretely updated with air conditioning and new bathrooms. Most Havana VIP clients stay 3 nights in Trinidad, and most would stay longer if they had the time.
Outside Trinidad to the northeast is the Valle de los Ingenios (Valley of the Sugar Mills) which was once one of Cuba’s most important sugar producing regions. Perched in the foothills of the Sierra Escambray mountains, this beautiful green valley is dotted with the remains of centuries-old sugar plantations and mills, and the slavery infrastructure that supported the industry. There are several ways to tour the valley, including an antique locomotive (when operating), by horseback, and by car which allows the most extensive possibilities.
Just 15 minutes to the south of Trinidad is Playa Ancón, one of the best white sand beaches on Cuba’s south coast with several reefs for diving and snorkeling just off-shore.
To get an idea of how great Trinidad Cuba is, enjoy this wonderful musical video of the song “Mi Trinidad” performed by neighborhood kids being taught traditional Cuban Trova music by our friends who, if you travel with Havana VIP, may be your friendly hosts, Pachi Ruíz and Lia Llorente of the famed duo Cofradía:
